What to do! Dud battery pack.
Hi All
Greetings & salutations, been quite a while since I posted here.
Have problem with my trusty old GMC B144K 14.4 volt cordless drill, no complaints as it has done everything ever asked of it.
But one of the two battery packs that came with drill, won't hold a charge, goes from a fully charged state to almost discharged within a few days when not being used. Checked terminal voltage of pack when discharged at 13.4 volts, so opened the pack up, checked voltage on each of 12 cells (NiCad 1.2 volt 1300 maH) & most cells averaged a reading of 1.21 volts except for 2 which read zero.
Seems I can't get a replacement pack from BB in my local, & can't locate a source for same cells in GMC battery pack. However Jaycar have NiCad 1.2 volt 1800 maH sub C cells at $7.00 each & Altronics have NiMH 1.2 volt 2000maH sub C cells at $4.00 each (special).
Would anyone know if either of these type of cells would be compatible with exisiting cells in the battery pack & could be used to replace the dud cells? Any advice would be greatly appreciated & most welcome.
Thanks Stan in WA

look in the yellow pages as there are places like battery world or the such repack them. Shop around as prices can be different between repackers

Replace all the cells with the nicads, not just the crook ones

Amen!
YES! Replace all the cells at the same time.
I've never heard of a sub-C cell but I would search around the web for cells. I once found new ni-cad cells for my Norelco razor.
I just purchased some lithium batteries from these people. Very reasonable and quick shipping. I don't know if they will ship to OZ.

Farnell (google them) have a whole bunch of different sizes of cell, with dimensions quoted, so if you measure the ones in your pack you should be able to find the terminology for the size that they are.

A place in Sydney called Wes Components sells after market battery packs to suit various drills. Would have to check to see what they have in the way of GMC. The last catalog I looked at a couple of years ago had a good assortment. Bought one for an old Bosch drill, seems to be fine.
Sub C cells have been around for a while now.
Could also try a place called Master Instruments. Used to deal with their Melbourne office heaps. Very helpful. Provide a repacking service if required. Know they carry a range to suit various makes. Also have stuff like solder tabs etc... to repack your own.www.lockwoodcanvas.com.au
I will never be the person who has everything, not when someone keeps inventing so much cool new stuff to buy.

To Jack E (in a Perth eastern suburb)
Hi Jack, thanks for your enquire. Haven't fixed the plurry thing yet, still looking for a supplier of rechargeable cells that don't cost a fortune (combination of scotch ancestry & pensioner coming out here) Master Instruments in Melbourne advised they could do a repacking job for me at approx $106.00, thats $212.00 for both battery packs, far more than original cost of drill unit in first place. Far far more
What irks me (& possibly others) is the cordless drills in my limited experience far outlast their associated battery packs, & high cost of replacement packs / battery repacking.
Sigh..... will keep searching & post an update when I have some joy, maybe should give up trying to beat the multinationals & just go buy an Ozito Cordless.......sigh!
Cheers Stan (just west of Jack E)

Someone mentioned Battery World before, do you have them over your way.
I have never needed a new battery but I know they used to sell replacement batteries, ready to go, ie you don't need to get yours re packed.
Not sure of cost but may be worth a look.
How much was the drill new, if it's GMC it may be cheaper just to get a new one.
Plus, if they still make the same model you would then have 2 drills."There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

You may not find GMC at the moment due to the bankruptcy, but it sounds like the brand will be back soon, so in a few months you may be able to buy replacement batteries or a new drill from GMC.

Stan,
If you can find someone else that has GMC batteries that have died you can get the individual cells from them and rebuild your battery pack. It doesn't matter that they may be higher amp/hr just as long as they are not lower. (you'll get a lower amp/hr rating for your battery pack).
Now comes the tricky bit. (yes I've done this) You have to have your battery pack down to individual cells and charge them (in parallel) @1.4v so they all have the same level of charge. Then rebuild your battery pack. If you don't you'll be back to square one as you will probably reverse voltage more cells when you try and charge your rebuilt pack.
I got my last dead battery packs from a battery guy. He let me have what I could take.
Hope this helps.
