    Default homemade drum sander questions.

i am planing on building a drum sander for sandign box stock after planing and sanding veneers.

most are run by a belts. can i attach the shaft direct to an old router this would also allow me to have variable speed.

what is the best speed for it to run at (rpm)

it needs to run far slower than the slowest speed you can reliably run a router at.

BTW, for some strange reason my memory dredged up the fact that the joinery I worked for many years ago specified a combined feed/sanding speed of 25m/s for their drum sander. I believe 'twas 'cos they'd determined it gave the best finish without sacrificing much speed in stock removal for the woods they normally worked. (Kapur & meranti) Funny what trivia the mind can spring on you, eh?

If my maths is right, for a small 15cm dia. drum that'd be around 3300rpm, given a slow feed
how fast dose a router spin?

Carl, in Shopnotes #86 they have a plan for a drum sander driven by a table saw. They put a 2" pulley on the tablesaw to replace the blade and the drum sander has a 5" pulley. Now I don't know for sure how fast your average table saw spins, but I am assuming 1440RPM, so the drum will spin at 2/5 * 1440 = 576RPM.

The drum itself is 5 1/16" in diameter or about 128mm, which gives a circumference of 402mm

If I am wrong about the tablesaw RPM and it is actually 2880RPM (likely) then they have worked on 1150 RPM for the drum.

PM me with your email if you want a copy.

    Edit:

Just looking at the PM2000 manual, their motor is 3600RPM, but the actual saw arbour is belt driven via pulleys, so I hven't a clue what RPM the saw arbour spins at!

Carl - routers are 8000 to 20,000+ rpm
Drum sanders are typically 1400 rpm

You could gear the router down but who would want to have a screaming router driving a drum sander when you could have a quieter 2800 geared or 1400 rpm motor.

Oh you lot of bad people leading me to perdition! Do you realise that now this is item 72 on my list of things to do?

Will use the old lathe for the drum, one of the dozen small motors in my collection and a gear box for the power feed, ....

Any opinions on the best way to regulate the thickness?

Sorry for not thanking you before, Chipman, but of course I downloaded and studied that description before bothering our fellow members. The problem is with my cynicism: IMHO to claim 5 micron accuracy with that home made machine one has to be a lier or sorely delusional. I would be absolutely ecstatic with 100u accuracy and in my ignorance I can't see how to achieve it.
