    Default Bending ply advice needed

I am branching out from square drums, cajons.

I want to make a set of African Dunduns.

They are 25 to 40cm diameter
and from 50 to 70 cm long
Cow skin roped on either end.

    I bevel cut 30 western red cedar staves - 30mm x 16mm to give me a 25cm diameter cylinder.
They glued up OK and sanded to a reasonable round surface.

The wrc probably wont be strong enough for a drum so I am going to try some Tassie Oak..

What I would like to try is to bend some bending ply (it is about 1mm thick) or bend veneers.

As you can imagine, bending them into these tight curves is going to put a fair bit of pressure on the timber.

Drum factories have big heated forms to bend , glue and clamp their drums.

What would you suggest I try ?
    Has anyone bent these dimensions?

One mm thick is most likely a single veneer, not plywood with an interior ply at right angles to the outside. Bending with the grain parallel to the cylinder axis is a whole lot easier than bending the other way. Sometimes done that way, though, e.g. guitar sides. Have a gander at some guitar making books at Grizzly. ( http://www.grizzlyindustrial.com/ ) I don't think they ship to Oz, but some of titles should be available at your local library or woodworking club.

    Thanks Joe.
I have a couple of those books.

The bending irons heat up to about 400 plus degrees but they are only about 6 inches long. Good for bending guitar sides.

We have a local supplier of ply products. One is a bending ply use for aircraft. It is a 3 ply. It comes in 0.8 up to 2.5mm thicknesses. I have spayed water and glycerine onto a 30cm wide piece.
I can bend it but not enough.

I thought I might be able to find a large steel pipe and heat it with a bar heater.
I don't know if it will be practicle or not??

I have bent veneer into about 14 cm redias, perpendicular to the grain. But only for small things. I can imagine getting very tangled doing bigger things. What about doing a half pipe in a vacuum press? then joining? Epoxy would be the glue of choice, BTW.
