if you have space, old Volpato would be better choice, probably 3 phase but just swap out the motor to single phase if you need to and you are sorted.

Yeah no room for one of those Albert, that older well made gear would certainly be a step up from these units.
I think I can eliminate the Sherwood from the hunt as watching it in action on Kuffy's channel the end with oscillating mechanism rocks back and forth making it not usable for smoothing longer work pieces.
I heard from a bloke on the weekend who reckons that the Scheppach slik 7.0b unit he has is pretty good.

We used to call the edge sanders "Big Boy 80's" I don't know why but that what we used to call them.

Last year I purchased a Major Woodworking MWE-ES689 Edge Sander []Page not found – Major Woodworking Equipment. Its needs 15Amps but I got it plugged into a standard 10 Amp GOP and it works fine. I fine that 80/100 grit belts are the best for my work but it could handle 40 grit no problem so much power, I have it connected to a 100mm exhaust duct which works well for straight edge sanding but hopeless dust collection when using the end of the machines belt for concave edge sanding, I think that I will have to add an addition bit of ducting to collect the dust when using the end of the sander.
Changing the belt is not quick like the Hammer model because there are two additional nut that need undoing and if I had a bigger budget I would have purchased the Hammer 950.
This model is rock solid in construction, much heaver than the Hare and Forbes models. It was just a little more expensive than the standard models but worth every extra cent. So pleased that I got the Oscillating Action as it more than doubles the life of the belts and prevents the straight line marks in the grain.

I have a Slik 7.0b. its a good unit for what it is.
