Default English Garden Bench Plans Wanted

    Hi All,

SWMBO has requested that I build a garden bench to sit on when watching the Grandchildren. I did have a plan for an upmarket bench (not Lutyens which is too complicated for me) from a few years ago, but lost it.

I have searched the Web for too long, and to no avail. After angled back rest, contoured seat, substantial legs/arms etc.

So the question is, does anyone have plans for an upmarket English style garden bench?

    George

Paul Sellers has a good bench project, though you'll need to join for a month to access the plans and video instruction (about $18 AUD).

Hi George I have this book that has a few bench/chair combinations. If any of these pics looks interesting I can copy the project for you.

    Cava,

    These may be of interest:

FWW magazine: June 1998 Issue #130 = "A Garden Bench for All Weather"
June 2008 Issue #198 = "Japanese Garden Bench"

    Cheers,

I’m sure I have the plans somewhere. I’ll have a search if you are interested

This is the Paul Sellers garden bench that I finished about 18 months ago, if you would like more info send me a pm. The frame is all draw bore mortice and tenon which worked really well even though I had never attempted anything like it before. Mostly hand tools although some machines used to get the stock to usable sizes. Timber is just cypress pine.

A merbau and a teak bench. I have made four over the years and I am sure I will be doing a few more.

I just found a photocopy of the plans and I have full size ply templates that you can copy. Maybe if you come for a drive to Lara and bring some butchers paper or cardboard or even a sheet of ply you can make copies to save yourself the chore of gridding it all out and doing them from scratch.

Nice choices. Also FWW #76, June 1989, "Three Benches".

I particularly like the lines and proportion of the Japanese Garden Bench, although I am not sure why it is ascribed as Japanese - more like Anglo-American.

Thank you all, it really is touching that we collectively have such a nice and helpful group.

I do like the Japanese influence bench, but it is not what I was after. And some of the other designs are very close to what I remember, and it may be that they could be tweaked somewhat to achieve what I recollect!

No doubt I have some serious thinking to do.

    Once again, thanks all.
