Default Evaporust - How I love the!

    A year ago I bought a 5 Liter container of evaporust.... http://www.evapo-rust.com.au/

    First up: 5 STARS!!!!!

I have used it EXTENSIVELY... old chisels, restoring planes, cleaning second hand tools, bolts, restoring things for people.... its in a 20 liter black plastic container with a lid.

I just toss the bits in there - after giving them a good clean in the back yard with a pressure cleaner and suds - and wait a day or so.

My real crime is I've only told 5 people about it (friends) and never taken any photos of the results.... well.....

There are 2 stories that would be of interest here.... FIRST, is I bought a NASTY dust collector. Cheap enough, for a good reason. The mung bean had left it in the rain a fair bit and it looked very much the worse for wear.... looked is the operative word. It worked perfectly, but the base was RS and the rest looked like a mad-max prop. Brought it home, stripped it down, tossed the bits in the evaporust, waited a day, took them out, water blast clean and dry then spray finished. It looks better than the factory now.

SECOND is a good woodwork mate, Delbs (of the forum), swapped a vice with me for a 6 foot length of seasoned oak. About 16" in diameter. Nice bit of timber (from the arboretum here). The vice might be 5th hand, but its in good nick, other than the usual "patina" that accompanies such things. Since I'm always broke, this was a good swap. Unwound the vice, plopped the bits in the drink and wited a day. WOWWWWWWW. Photos attached. You can see the results on the extension arms. The faces had a good layer of "30 year sitting around" and all of that is gone. In fact, you can see where the face was dressed with an angle grinder at the factory.

For a vice that was old, it is now almost new. I have a glass-blaster so I'll strip the paint and repaint it shiny sexy black hammertone next....(maybe not today, Im soooo tired after my operation last week). Sorry for the rant, its what happens when you are in forced convalescence!

Anyway, my suggestion is for every one of you here to stop buggering around with electrolysis, lemon juice, molasses or whatever and just buy some Evaporust. It is First class, works like a miracle and I would buy another 5L without question (but it seems to last forever anyway)

Looks like your very happy with the product.

Any negatives like being extra highly toxic etc??

My other thought was if you drop your "rusty old bits" not your other bits in the container does it not contaminate the solution and make it go off? Do the instructions say tis is ok?

Like you I'm eternally broke and always trying to fix up old things, sometimes the fixing and cleaning gets very expensive and the cheap do-er-up is more than an off the shelf option and you get caught out. Do you think the Evaporust is an economical product??

It looks as though it can absorb a certain amount. From their website:

"Evapo-Rust™ has a chemical carrying capacity of 300grams of pure, dry rust per 5 litres."

Where did you buy the product and what's the cost? It looks like it did a good job on the vice.

Bought directly from the site above.... $74.95 inc postage, but that was June last year.

I've used it extensively now. Thinking back, on at least 12 separate occasions. The worst I did were a bunch of totally knackered chisels and two ancient planes. The planes were a disaster. Epic trouble.....

All came up pristine. The bloke I did them for inherited them when his dad passed on. He isn't a woodworker, but those two planes were the only physical thing left he had of his pop. They came up pristine. I did a premium flattening and fettling job for him, sharpened to 13k and repainted the tops in gloss. I swear the guy nearly burst into tears.

It is apparently non poisonous. Now, as for longevity, I think I've cheated the system. You will note on their site that the chelation process releases the iron oxide from the chelator bond and dumps it. It leaves this as a very fine particulate in the bottom. Rust! I noticed the efficiency dropping and read the "holds 300 grams in suspension" with a cynical eye.....being broke I thought about how to remove said "suspended rust".... So I plonk in a rare earth magnet and after a bit fish it out.

My thought were this whole chelation processes is a cycle, so it's a matter of removing one part of the cycle....

It's covered in fuzz. Rust fuzz! Dry rust fuzz! I've used it now to death and the efficiency has not dropped a scerrick since new (it magically restored it?) maybe not, perhaps not scientific, but mine is still going very strong and it works good and fast. I'm convinced....manufacturers may say otherwise!

I was going to ask if you purchased it locally, as I've been keeping an eye out for it. Oh well, maybe one day I'll get around to ordering some!

We have signed a contract with Supercheap Autos to stock Evapo-Rust Australia wide, but unfortunately the wheels don’t turn that quickly in regard to making product available by estimated stocking dates.
Long story short, until this happens, Victoria is supplied overnight via Sydney for 1 and 5 litre quantities and 2-3 days for 20litres plus.
Looks like currently you can only by it online from Syd.

My price is 8 months old....it's just what I paid for it, not what it may be now.

I thought to do a final full soak of everything since the last post. Put another 5l of water in the big bucket and tossed the whole lot in again. Came out just now (10pm) and looks absolutely f@$n fantastic.

I'll put the bucket outside with a small hole drilled in the lid. Leaving it in the sun concentrates it back down to 5l or so after 2 days. The bucket is thick black plastic. I've done this as part of the soak process, the hotter it gets the better and faster it works. The buckets are some sort of poly (like the DIY watering garden hoses) and were bought from Bunnings for ~$15.... They are very tough poly.

I use 5 of them for dust collection with the Dust Deputy as the lids fit air tight like a paint tin. Probably the best thing I've ever bought from that cursed pestilential shithole.

Is this available from retail stores, or only Evapo-Rust?

    Default When it's too good...

I'm not a shill, just a woodwork guy who loves restoring, but I recon the guy who holds this franchise has his thumb firmly up his .

He is sitting on an absolute bonanza. This is one of the most kick products out there and every single bloke with a garage SHOULD have a bottle of it.

It drives me to tears when I see a fantastic product managed by someone who simply doesn't have the capacity to market and sell properly. Maybe I should contact someone up the chain and rip the franchise off him.

Hahaha. I wonder if you'll see that splashed across their website as part of their latest promotions.

Good to hear of a product that delivers too.
