Ex-Furniture factory fire at Sherwood
There was a factory fire at Sherwood the other day. It originally was the old furniture manufacturing firm - Carricks, later known as Elite Furniture.
I did my apprenticeship as an upholsterer there in the mid 70's and it had closed down in the early 80's and became a storage business.
It was sad to see this happen, not only for the many present tenants whom some of them have lost their businesses but that building was the largest furniture maunufacturing business in Queensland in its day. It survived the 1974 floods which came just over the 2nd story floor, I remember that well, we had to drag everything out onto the front lawn every day for weeks to dry out !. It is history now lost. Is there anyone else out there who worked there , it would be good to get in contact .
Neil.

Hi Neil,
Just got directed to your 2007 post from a web search for "Carricks".
I know a bloke who was a cabinet-maker at Carricks for donkey's.
From what I remember, he would have worked there from maybe the 50s, certainly 60s and 70s, so he was probably a foreman by the time you were an apprentice.
He's still in Brisbane and if you wanted, I could put you in contact.
Cheers,
Bruce.
