Default Exchange for building a timber sound mixing console

Hi. This is an initial query to see if there is anyone out there who may be able to help me. I would like to build a timber console for my sound mixing desk, but neither have the skill to build myself or the money to pay someone to build it.

It struck me that there may be people (in the Melbourne area or beyond) who'd be interested in an exchange / swap arrangement. In return for building the console I could offer two things. I'll come to those in a moment. I am imagining that the console will be more than just a boxy looking worktop, but may have a curvaceous feel to it. Thats why I dont think I've got the skill to take it on myself.

So heres what I'd exchange (in two parts) in return for building the console,

First, I have some salvage from my recent home reno (of a 1910 weatherboard in Seddon). I would exchange - some hardwood floor boards, some red wood studs, a lovely solid (but smallish) piece of old pine which looks like its been cut from an old substantial dinning table, a lovely solid 1950's kitchen shelve unit with the intact glass and a few other old shelving units and some other bits and bobs.

For the second part of the exchange, as I am aware that paying for such a unit (which would take some time to build) would cost a fair bit.

If you've ever wanted to make a radio programme, produce a TV quality soundtrack for a video you've made, make a podcast, or even create a piece of experimental music then this may be the very project for you.
I would provide one on one tuition - teaching and enabling you to produce sound to a professional level in my studio set up, which features a fully professional Pro Tools HD3 rig. (I teach Sound Design part-time to film and TV students at Swinburne University in Melbourne). You'd be learning and at the same time getting access to a studio facility to produce a project and this is something that people pay thousands of dollars for in short skills development courses.

In regard to building the console - I would of course cover all the costs involved in building it...materials and if you were travelling...the costs of that, as well as hospitality - meals, tea and beer (or whatever beverage wets your whistle!) if you were doing it in situ over a weekend or two.

I will provide more details in reply. I do not have detailed plans, as I would imagine drawing up the details in a final plan would be done in collaboration with whoever took the project on. I'd provide lots of examples, dimensions and suggestions as to how it should look.

Thanks for reading and looking forward to any replies.

    Hi Foosion,
which desk are you wanting to build a console for? I run a Tascam DM24.
Send me a PM and I'll swap some details with you. It depends on the time frame you are looking at and just how big a unit you want.
I teach IT, WW and Vet Music Tech Production at a Melb school.
    All the best

Sounds interesting but I live in Sydney and am designing one for my own studio as we speak. Also have done more than my share of woodwork that did not pay!
In my case it is more complex because mine is a compositional studio so I deed instant access to all recording and playing equipment from the same chair. Still trying to figure that out.

Good Luck and remember to post pics when done !
