Default Expansion and contraction in action

Hi all, making a collectors cabinet over the past 12 months on and off, with 10 drawers 45mm high, with 11 gaps each 4mm wide, as per my collection of business cards, making a total of 4.4mm in gaps.

Trimmed all the drawer heights with a #5 plane to give this 4.4mm overall gap, as shown in the top of the attached picture. The drawers are just sitting one on the other, no rails yet.

An hour after doing this, the gap had shrunk to 4.0mm i.e the drawers had increased in overall height by 0.4mm in that time, at about 11am.

Just so hard to get it precisely right in the tropics.

The drawer fronts are made by resawing a 100 x 100mm post of Northern Silky Oak.

The gap did not move, the timber moved!! The drawers look to be about 450mm overall height. With a 0.4mm movement that is approx 0.1% expansion.
