    Default Exterior door construction

I AM going to build an entry door to my home (Despite what my wife believes). It is a round top door. This adds a tad more work, I know. I figure that the top round (arched) rail will be about 5" wide leading into the side rails (5" also), with lites (window)in the top 1/3 of the door...the rest of the door will be panels. The
What wood is best for an exterior door that will take a lot of Northeast weather? I don't want to deal with shrinking and expanding to the point of the door not fitting during certain seasons.
    What to do about weatherstripping???
Anyone have experience with the round top (arch) door? Do I glue of that top rail and have all horiz grain? or segment the top like a round table (if you get my drift)? If I do horiz grain, then I would be gluing up about 10" and removing what I don't need. Anyway, the choice of wood is critical. I prefer white oak...is that ok?

    Hi Alan

Perhaps an American Woodworking Forum might be the best place to go for an answer on this...... your country suffers extremes of weather that almost none of Australia shares. In addition, the species of timber available in our two countries is completely different. I believe for the application you describe, you will probably get the most rapid advise on timber and weatherproofing from your countrymen and women - all else we will inundate you with opinions!

http://www.woodbin.com/docs/links.htm - have a look at this. It may be helpful.

I have built an arched top door - it is a lot of fun.......but just a word of warning

the second one would've looked stunning

    take care
