My wife....only kidding...just needed to be first so we can get it out of the way...for construction I like the bugle screw....love em...they don't make screws like they used too...phillips head too often rip the guts out of the head and you can't get the screw in or out and as for brass screws...they are the weekest screws I have ever experienced...anyhow that's my opnion for what it's worth...

I voted for square drive screws, but it should be noted that there are infact two types of square drive.

I use the Sachys Robertson type (the most commonly available type in Oz, as far as I know), they have a slight taper to the hole. Then there's the other square drivers (more commonly used in the US I think) that don't have any taper to them.

I also voted for square drives cause you can't beat them for everyday use (IMHO), but if I could have voted for two options, I would have chosen brass sloted screws cause I think they look really nice in a quality brass hinge/fitting with all the slots lined up.

what about those crap SS screws. I bought a bag of them to build a timber screen and half of them broke off in the timber before they were fully in. Bastards. Now I need to get them out...

I use whatever screws are most appropriate. Mostly phillips head woodscrews I guess. Sometimes zinc plated.

Horses for courses, I like the square drives but not where they are seen.
Preferably panheads as they don't pull through the timber.
Also, nothing that BUnnies sell as they are overpriced and second rate as a rule.
    And whats wrong with nails?
Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

Sachys Roberstons for all structural stuff and brass slot heads for visible hardware.

The heads on the counter-sunk square drive jobs are rarely round, so they're not great for anything that's visible.

    Ben.
I use mostly the black ones, I have used the brass ones that came it
the trial pack to hold a sandpaper organiser on the end of my mini lathe stand.

There is a huge variety in the quality of brass screws. The cr@p sold by Bunnies and most other hardware stores snap off at the slightest tweak, but most sold by specialist woodworking outlets seem to be pretty good IMHO.

I thought quality woodwork didn't require screws?
