I am really down on YouTubers at present. The great majority, and increasing so, are click baiters. There seem to be few who actually either present advanced builds or advanced techniques. Otherwise it is all the same: how to cut a dovetail, how to clean a hand plane, sharpen a blade. Lots of baiting with a title that promises a new, amazing tool build, and then it is something boringly mundane. The fellow in the linked video just makes jigs.

What do people think about Tom McLaughlin's videos (epic woodworking)?

Longer format videos, not clickbait and covers quite a variety of techniques.

Sorry Derek, but have you flicked through his entire catalogue??? To say that he just makes jigs? Is SO inaccurate…. There is absolutely no clickbait, no advertising and no grandstanding about any of his videos in nearly 10 years of content?

    Regards from Brisbane

    Hi Gary

You are likely correct about this fellow. My apology. One of the factors that influences me is the level these videos aim at. I am past another demo on sharpening and a simple jig. Call me jaundiced.

An example of the worst video is the one that popped up as I switched on my laptop. I am all for pretty girls, but this is sooo obviously click bait, and just typical of so much now overtaking YouTube (I also HATE river tables, which are so fashionable for now and devoid of woodworking skill). She has more numbers on this one video in a few days that all my videos ever reached together.

I bought a boost sim and activated this month so I've got data to burn for a change. I've been using the opportunity to surf youtube to try and get clues on some problems I'm trying to solve (outboard won't start! etc )

It really is a cesspool. 9/10 videos you watch are utterly useless, and an "intro" is often a clue. Why on earth these people think their little splash screens and dodgy music enhances the video I cannot imagine. Amateurs having an honest go I can bear, pseudo "professional" clickbait....eeesh.

    Derek,
You have to do, what you have to do,if you want hits on YouTube.

To be fair, the Bum wiggles seem to get a lot of clicks.[emoji6]
Been like that for a few thousand years or probably more.

    Cheers Matt.
