Which Side of the Fence?
Hi All,is there any truth to the rumour I heard years ago?A ordinary (run of the mill) timber paling fence will last longer if the palings are fitted to the (so called) weathering side.

My fences have to endure a temperature swing of 70C and wind gusts up to 100kph.
That simply blows the boards out of the fence! The boards are staggered to alternating sides of the horizontal rails to cut the wind loading. That was a rebuild maybe 6/7 years ago now and I haven't lost a fence board since. I keep some wood carving cedar logs on the tops of the dog houses so they don't blow away.
My bigger problem is that the hardware rots, regardless of orientation. Every 5 years, I go around and add new #8 x 1.5" Robertson screws.
I gave up on the solid side fence = 25+m 10' 4x4 pressure treated posts on 8' centers, stucco wire and new grapevines to eventually give some privacy. I'm quite sure that the deer could jump it if they really wanted to but I suspect that they're uncertain of the exact height of the top of the wire.
