Filling screw holes?
Morning all,
I am working on a small renovation project and have a screw hole (in an oak panel) that has stripped, I need to fill the hole and reuse it with the same size wood screw, any suggestions?Jon.

- Remove the screw from the hole.
- Drill the hole out to a size at least twice the size of the screw's diameter.
- Make a plug from the same timber as the surrounding timber.
- Use a plug bit for this in order to make a plug with surface grained timber. (Using a dowel as a plug will reveal end grain which will appear darker than the surrounding timber.)
- Insert the plug so that the grain of the plug aligns with the grain of the surrounding wood.
- Drill a pilot hole for the screw (a diameter smaller that the thred diameter) and insert the screw.

Use Epoxy,
Fill the screw hole with epoxy...........wait till dry...........Drill a pilot hole first say 0.5mm then drill your screw home...........................easy!
But if you want to be extra careful do a practice run first on some scrap to see how she goes.
Hope this helps

An alternative if the hole repair is hidden by the screwhead is builders bog, possible easier to apply if its a vertical surface. Not quite as good as epoxy perhaps and a tad pink.

There is no question that using epoxy will work, if your objective is merely to obtain the mechanical benifit of the screw. However, if, your objective is to bring the piece close to its original condition (as the word renovation implies) then my recommendation will better achieve this objective.
