I guess my take on this is that it becomes a question of aesthetics combined with well-considered design, and impeccable execution.. It also has to have an intangible 'something" that sets it apart from purely utilitarian work. By this I (think) I mean that it is not just a piece of furniture, but it also has an artistic or sculptural aspect to it. Usually it also has a sharp-intake-of-breathe pricetag as well. Is it worth it or justified? All in the eyes of the person stumping up the cash, I suppose. Have a look in AWR when they showcase pieces from Sturt or elsewhere similar. I think this will go a long way to addressing your question.
