Default Fine Wood Work Association (WA), and some pictures

For those WA members who are not aware of its existence, the Fine Wood Work Association holds meetings every second Monday of the month in a variety of locations, usually someone's workshop or a venue suited to the presentation. There are presentations from highly skilled wood turners, furniture and instrument makers and many other associated fields of interest.

I have only attended the last two months and my impression is that there is a mix of power- and hand tool users. There is a library of books, magazines, and power tools that may be loaned. The first meeting I attended was at the workshop of a professional furniture restorer. The last one was the AGM. The next meeting will be a demonstration of turning. Contact me for details if you are interested.

    The website is http://www.finewoodwa.com/index.html

Of interest is the Out of the Woods competition for 2005, entries submitted to the next Perth Woodworking Show. This year entrants are given two blocks of timber, one Jarrah and the American Oak, each 12"x4"x1", and the tasks is to build something with these.

As a change of pace from building furniture for home, I decided to enter. This is the reason for the recent bowsaw and marking knives.

This weekend I finished a little box to present the marking knives - basically I just didn't think it safe to exhibit the knives where young children may touch, so decided to build something to put them in. The box is mainly pine - my hats off to those who build with this a lot. It is deceptively difficult timber to work with since it chips so easily. My dovetails look like hell. I only chose the pine since I thought it would be a good contrast to the Jarrah of the knife handles. Anyway, thanks to Squizzy for the Bluegum roofing rafters, some of which was used here in the box lid. It is a nice pink timber that I thought would compliment the red in the Jarrah.

Below are the tools I made. I have posted them here before, but these are new pics.

    Regards from Perth

The bowsaw looks fantastic Derek. The contrasting timber in the box is a real treat. Sometimes I wish more woodworkers (read those great finewoodworkers who have heaps more skill than I) would mix timbers for those contrasting effects. Excellent work. How did you narrow it down to Bluegum??.

It's a pity that the website is lacking most of the content of the Out of the Woods competition.
