Fine Woodworking Video Tips
Do any of you computer wizzes know if there is any way of saving the video files that FWW put onto their tips sites. They are a great bonus to the articles in the mag and it would be good to save them for future reference. They keep them on their site for six months and then are no longer available for reference.
Thanks
Suresh

You cant actualy save them using a button or anything, as they're streaming content.
There are a number of freeware programs that'll do it for you.
You'll be amazed at whata google search will turn up. Jsut type in save, streaming video and you'll get heaps of stuff.
I'll send you the bill.Cheers,
Adam

Hi Suresh,
No need for fancy software, all you need to do is go to your Windows directory (usually found on the root directory of your C: drive), find the folder Temporary Internet Files and you should find the downloaded video file there. Note however that you must wait for the entire streaming content to be downloaded (normally indicated by a bar at the bottom of your viewer).
Hope this helps,
Alex.

as you can see, a little bit of knowledge (on my part) is a dangerous thing.
Cheers,

Alexg is correct, it is saved in the Temporary Internet Files folder. If you are using Windows 98 (or ME I think), that directory will be in the Windows folder.
However for NT, 2000 or XP it will be in Documents and Settings/login name/Local Settings.
Bit complicated.
Instead in Explorer click Tools/Internet Options/General/Settings/View Files
You will have to right click the file and copy then go to the directory (in Windows Explorer) where you want it saved and paste it.
Happy Hunting

I've tried doing these things . Have downloaded videos from FWW using both RealTime Player and Quicktime , copying and pasting but when I try to open the saved file with Real time or quicktime , I get the same error message - dont understand the format. Bugger . Any solutions ? Peter :confused:

Suresh, what is FWW. Give me the URL and I'll try to download one of their videos and see what program will run it.

Is FWW Finewoodworking by Taunton Press??
If so is it the video clips under online video clips that you want?
If so, don't click on the video link so it plays in Explorer, right click and select Save As.
It will ask where you want to save it to, select your directory and wait till it is downloaded and you will have the video for posterity.
To play just go to the file in Windows Explorer and double click on the file and it should play.
Hope this works for you

Click on the Quicktime video link, let it fully stream to your computer, when it has finished right click on the video window and select "Save as a QuickTime movie", job done. You have to right click on the movie itself to bring up the menu.

This does not work either but I have just had my son who is more knowledgible than me work out how to do it . Right click on the Real Player for the FWW video -does not work for Quicktime and click on "Save target as " . This will give you an address that you will have to write on a notepad. Play Movie . Go to "Find files " on desktop and enter the address previously noted . When you have found the file drag it to the file where you want to permantly store it . I have found that this works and I have downloaded 3 video clips and replayed them .
Happy watching

Absolutely right Sprog - sorry for the misinformation Suresh.
I read all the help files in Realplayer and according to them the file can't be saved. It is something to do with copyright.
I can't even get the video to play at all - just jerky blurred frames. When it is finished downloading I try to play and it does the download again.
Peter36, I can't see how yours works, the only files being saved is the small ram file which just directs you to the download site.
I haven't tried Quicktime yet - the download is twice the size of the Realplayer file, but will give it a go - seems the only way to go according to Sprog.

Finally got it.
Could not get this to work with realplayer but works with Quicktime.
Open Quicktime Player (Start/Programs/Quicktime/Quicktime Player).
Click Edit/Preferences/Quicktime Preferences
Tick the box that says Save movies in disk cache
Close Quicktime
Click on the Quicktime movie you want in FWW.
Let it download and play (this took an hour on my connection).
When finished open Internet Explorer, click
Tools/InternetOptions/General/Settings/View Files
You will have to right click the file and copy then go to the directory (in Windows Explorer) where you want it saved and paste it.
Double click on the saved movie to play it.
Right clicking on the movie screen as suggested by Sprog did not work for me as Save As a Quicktime Movie was greyed out.
