    Question Finishing Silky Oak

    Greetings Everyone
I've just finished making an easel. The timber I used is Silky Oak that had a previous life as bettening in our bathroom. I usually finish my timber with polyurethane over sanding sealer. This time, because the silky oak is so dry I was wondering if I should oil it instead. Would anyone have any suggestions for a suitable product that is readily available?

Mick - stick to what you know. Oil ain't what them DIY shows make out. And it certainly ain't going to help if the timber is dry??? Besides you want the timber dry otherwise your easel will start twisting and bending & stuff.
I polish silky-oak almost on a daily basis and all I use (well, most commonly use) is 2 coats of sanding sealer followed by about 4 thin coats of N/C lacquer (both mirotone) The average person can't tell me what type of finish it is and is quite often mistaken for a waxed finish - but I do this for a living so I know the tricks

    Cheers!

Mick I have used Rustins Danish oil on Silky Oak bowls to good effect.
Like most all oil & wax finishes it will need redoing at some stage.
If you want something more permanment do what Shane said.

    Cheers
