    Default Fishing Clock Ideas

I am moving to the coast and need a tide clock to help me know when I should go fishing.

I bought the mechanism and face as a kit.

Can anyone direct me to some idea for making the clock?
I was thinking of having a fishing wall with the tide clock, barometer, thermometer, time clock and probably a piece of string - all on the same board
All the information you need to do with fishing.

The forum search and web search have plenty of clocks set on a block or with a circular wooden frame. I was after some different ideas.

Any suggestions on making the fishing wall welcome.

    Fishing tips welcome.

    Hi Scally,

Hmm, I'm no fisher person but here's some ideas for you:
    • Fishing lures or flies instead of clock numerals, the clock hands naturally must be hooks, or fish or rods
    • A small shelf under eg the clock but instead of wood, make it a hammock-type shelf made from fishing net
    • If making a pendulum clock, use a really small glass ball float (a really big clear glass marble?) instead of the big brass weight
    • If edging anything, any possibility of cutting an old/broken rod in half lengthwise keeping all attachments on it and using that as the edge - wouldn't want to be considering sacrilegous against fishing, so don't use your best/favourite rod
    • Oh - yes, put the red and green lights up on either side of the whole thing, you know, port and starboard - don't ask me which goes on what side as I am soooo not a fisher person at all
Naturally, I expect photos as I think the whole board will look fantastic.

    Cheers
    Wendy

I was thinkin sorta a boat... you know a fishin boat?... or maybe a jetty? have the clock mechanism on the side sorta thingy or maybe behind it a ledge under with some fishy type thingys attached?

Damn I always have probs deciding what to make someone until I meet them have a yarn with them get a feel for what they like then I make it...

Anyway without knowing you I do know what Id do!!... Something completely out of the box!! ... okay hows this?

Make a coffee table you know a glass topped one with a false bottom... in the false bottom insert the clock so its hands are pointing to N S E W (instead of 12 3 6 and 9) make some rope knots some lures a small fishin line... heck make the coffee table outta drift wood!!! tinkle around the edges some beach sand some star fish some small fish some hooks an old gum boot whatever fishy thing takes your fancy... make sure the clock is seeable!!

    OR!!!

What about a dining table with a circular lazy susan in the centre with the clock in that? NSEW on the outter ring of the table?

    mmmm

    OR!!!!

What about a bar?? I mean you could even do a ruddy grandfather clock mechanism in the front of a bar!!... man that would be it!!! A nice Jarrah bar the front centre section out by 2in curved clock inserted in numericals stuck on or routed in different lighter wood inserted (veneered) into routed area... fix an anchor to one side and a fishin line to the other repleat with a good quality reel... on the bar top... make the top and fix star fish hooks lures shells whatever into the single peice of timber make a temporary surround mix a batch of two part polurathine goop pour over let set take of temp surround and fix to top of bar... MAN!! that would be soo cool

You oughta hear my ideas for my ferrier brothers bar!! think furnace box inserted in the delivery opening!! false flames red hot horse shoes and stools that kick!! dont know how Im gonna figure that one but I will ...

Anyway mate my best advice? THINK OUTSIDE THE NORM!!! do the unexpected and it will reward you by being stunning unusual and a one off never to be repeated beauty!

    Fantastic.
    Great ideas.
Now you have got me thinking.

My scribbles have turned into a wall cabinet with a carved fish on top of the cabinet.
A small dial for the eye and the other gauges and tide clock along the lateral line of the fish.
The cabinet with glass doors to show off my many different reels on shelves with varied dividers.
A drawer along the bottom for a few trinkets - lure/fly boxes, floats, soluna table.
Door knobs could be lures or knoted rope.

I am still coming to terms with some of your ideas so I expect the plan to go through a few modifications yet. A friend gave me a very nice laminated landing net -it would be good to fit that in somehow.
I am not into boats so the boat/anchor theme doesn't fit. More the beach/rock/esturary type of fishing.
The coffee table would be pretty neat.
A bar - well I will only be renting for a start so maybe I can save that for later.
Good ideas Wendy with using hooks and things. I new you would have some interesting ideas.
Wild Dingo, where did you escape from? I wish I had that sort of imagination.

Thanks for the great ideas. I'll get back to my scribbling.

    Thanks Scally,

One last idea, a hook for your old battered retired fishing hat complete with all it's old fish lures, fish guts, etc etc, well, when you retire one - do hats ever get retired?

    cheers

"Where did I escape from?" Im damned if I remember!!! But wherever it was Im never alone!!

Anyways!!... Your renting? cool that makes it even easier!! So you got a lounge suite right? yeah cause you have!! So make a frame to fit the back of it take the frame up about a foot - 18in higher than the back of the lounge itself... with me? excellent!~

Now make like a frame work around that so it turns into a box type affair add depth by adding frames of various thickness around the inside of it... there is a bloody name for this type of frame but Im buggared if I know it... anyway! make it deep sorta round 8 or so inches would do...

Now make an island type affair out of wood in the middle... make a couple of coconut trees and a man layin back on a hammock between them... then you can whack some boondies sand and such all along the bottom of your beach island scene... so got this?

Now get some Huon Pine or such yellow type wood make a sun shape stick it in the top corner... this is going to be your clock face sun so make it nice and large say 6 or so inches in diameter... on the other side make another disc like out of a darker timber Id go Tuart or some other light mustard colored wood for difference... this is your thermometer moon get a round dial thermomenter from Carbatec or such...

You still with me mate? well hang on Im almost done!!

Instead of the island you could use peices of timber offcuts and make a bridge or jetty and make a bloke sittin fishin off the end... to make the blue of the water I believe theres something or other (glass with blue crepe paper under?) that the boat modellers use to portray the sea... anyway as long as you have a sun and moon you have an area to make your dials

    mmmm okay!! got anothery!!

Same thing only island has two naked sheilas servin you layin back in the hammock... wood carvin under sayin "Fishin... gives a bloke the best of everythin!"

Use the furniture you have to create a backdrop for your work... ie: the backs of the ladder back dining chair can be enhanced by adding a "canvas" a ply backing board with some art work carving veneering whatever... the dining table itself can be a work of art by including the same... the bedhead again use it... book case change the design to make a fisherman standing with rod and reel the jetty in the background being the book shelf

See renters get to take their stuff with them so make use of the spacial areas you KNOW you have at your disposal without impinging on the landlords spacial areas... use your imagination let it go think of something and let your mind see it then make it

Am I sayin its that easy? no but theres no reason why it shouldnt be other than your own fear of trying something totally out of whack with what you have been led to believe is normal and acceptable... woodbutcherin no matter what sort is art... so create some art from within!!

    Default Out of Whack

Shane you are one scary bloke but you have got me thinking.
This fisherman's weather wall/lounge/chair/mermaid could be a work in progress for a long long time.

    Keep 'em coming.

Old fishing hats Wendy don't get retired unless the rest of the family can get hold of them.

Someone once gave me a tray of chocolate pilchards. Now I have an idea what to do with them.

Have you seen that site with the carved still life things, like a coat hanging on a rack? Maybe I could try to carve a tackle bag. Hang it on the wall and put all the dials on it?

As a keen surf fisherman I recon a carefully selected piece of driftwood would look ace with clock/barometer etc inset. I have seen quite a few "fishing shrines" that include antique fishing rods, reels and tackle. The maritime gear like sextants, compass etc are always interesting conversation pieces. The replica sea charts, old pictures look good too. Sounds like a fun project.

maritime shrine? Wow!! Now that makes me think of other things... so you a boat fisherman? got an old dinghy thats about buggared? so lets make that into our shri... eerr clock thingy!!! not too hard say the dinghys only 10ft LOA and what 4ft beam thereabouts? makes a great bookcase come shri... err clock space!! Cripes epoxy the outboard to it and some old oars a couple of PFDs rods reels an odd squid or two couple of empties and lean against living room wall... whalla!!! easy as... AND bonus!! as a renter you just pick it up and buggar of without the landlord bein the wiser about you havin a boat in the living room that is!

I knew a bloke years back in Darwin who was into Harleys... didnt ride one had a real balance problem but loved them something shocking... so he got one and made a fishtank in the fuel tank and it sat in his living room right alongside the tv and stereo... when his lease was up he just rolled the bike out and onto the back of his ute and gone... owner had no idea there had been a bloody great harley OR a fishtank in his living room (both very against the landlords wishes)

The old driftwood idea has actually been done to death in my view HOWEVER!! that bein said... one can let loose the old imagination and use it as a backdrop rather than the main event!!!

I was also thinking that idea I had before of makin a box type frame on the back of the lounge? well how about this? Is your house brick or timber framed? Hopefully its timber framed... mmm rental? damn!! okay what about this then... you get an old door frame from a second hand salvage place put a back on it 1/4 or 1/2in ply will do whack some supporting timbers spaced along the back just to keep it all together like... this will give you a playing area of what? about 6 1/2foot x 3ft? thereabouts... so now you got your back board... with frame!! so now go to with a vengence!!... do it either upright or laying down either ways good once finished a few solid hooks whacked in the wall (yeah yeah rental so get permission!!) and whack it up! Not only would it be outstanding centrepiece for the living room and a definant chick magnet "oooh isnt that unique" "yeah I made it babe" and your in like flynn! But its also a great incentive to make somethin else!

Okay so now youve got your... hey!! what about an old tyre? yeah an old tyre!! so clean the thing!! then stick some timber behind it screws usually hold things pretty good Ive found... then make the clock thermometre whatever thingy inside that?... What about an old anchor? use it as the centrepiece of a... what about that door frame idea!! the anchor could be the centre peice of that!!.... mmmm what else?

Fishin rods!!! right!!! fisherman needs fishin rods has many fishin rods right?!! RIGHT!!! so get 4 fishin rods cut them down to what? say 2 at 5ft and 2 at 3ft then glue them together in a frame back with timber as needed... what a frame!!

Geez I love this sort of thing!!! Let the old imagination go nuts!

Wait a minute!! what about all those old fishin tackle boxes? why not use them! So get a half dozen rip the lifs off take out the small hook sections so youve got the box itself join em together so youve got a square of 6 tackle boxes... now make one box with lures stuck all around and on the backing board tag them for the different fish you catch with them then another with different sized hooks shells or whatever in another till you have the 2 or 3 that you need for the clock and other bits... sounds the go eh? Recycling!

I now bedda shut up an let someone elses imagination go nuts... HEY!! got anothery! get hold of Wendy (thats that sweet little Ruffy chick up there) and beg her for that red leather tee shirt and use that as a backdrop!!! man wouldnt that stand out from the crowd!... and then I wouldnt have to wear it

    Default Balance

Right, I am into the spirit now.

    How about

A square of MDF about half a metre by half a metre.
Paint it blue - like the ocean
Put the big tide clock right in the middle
Place one of the other 4 weather guages in each corner-for balance. You need balance fishing off the rocks.
    Call it "Gone Fishin"

    Should do the trick.
