Default Five Sequential Iconic Chairs of the 20th Century

Five Sequential Iconic Chars of the 20th Century was my second term essay for my ANU furniture program. We had a choice of 20 chairs spanning about 100 years from Michael Thonets #14 Bentwood Cafe Chair, to Shiro Kuramata's Miss Blanche Chair. The only stipulation was that they had to be five chairs in chronological order. The aim was to learn how one chair influenced subsequent chair design and development, and how material and technology effected the development of the chairs.

The five Sequential chairs I chose were:

    • Low Chair Wood by Charles and Ray Eames
    • Womb Chair By Earo Saarinen
    • Dining Armchair Rod by Charles and Ray Eames
    • Tulip Chair by Earo Saarinen
    • Panton Stacking Chair by Verner Panton

I have attached my essay as a pdf.

I liked your essay, Thumbsucker, well done.

Charles & Ray did some really fantastic things with plywood. The LCW is extremely comfortable, although as you get older it becomes more and more difficult to get out of it
