Default Fixing Hardwood slats to metal Posts

    Hi All,

I am a new member and have read with interest old posts on this topic. I am trying to fix hardwood slats to metal posts for a privacy screen. I have the good Tec screws and have pre-drilled through the timber. However, I find the drill cuck just spins and the screw won't turn once it hits the metal.

Maybe I need to buy a better cordless drill, or pre-drill the metal as well? Another option I guess would be to fix timber against the poles and screw the slats into them.

Any thoughts would be greatly apprecieated.

    regards

Are you using a Hex driver bit?

Is the bit spinning in the chuck or on the screw?

From what you're saying, it sounds like the driver you're using is round, therefore the chuck won't grip properly, as there is a fair amount of torque needed to drive them through steel

    Thanks DJ's Timber,

I tried the phillips head bit and have now moved to the square raised head for more grip, but the drill is still spinning in the chuck!

I think I will pre-drill wider as the old poles are thicker than the new ones I added for support.

Hey Wayne is it too late to weld a piece of Flat bar or angle down the side of the post and drilling holes in it and screwing through that into the timber from behind?? the original post is probably too thick for self-drilling screws.

    Thanks HazzaB,

After a busy weekend I managed to pre-drill holes for the screws and purchased a you beaut Impact Driver - amazing what you can do with the right tools for the job. That has much more torque than a normal cordless drill.

    Only 260 holes to go!

    cheers
