Fixing Sides to Tray
Friends lent us their Macadamia nut cracker, so I'm returning it mounted on a wooden tray.

What is the best way to attach the sides to the base? Due to the effort required to crack the nuts, I want the base to sit on the table, so can't use the usual method of cutting a groove in the sides for the base. I was thinking of either dowels, after glueing it together or put grooves in the sides of the base & tray sides, then using strips of 3mm ply in the grooves. I know that by not having the base floating in the sides that there could be problems with timber movement, but I'll use WOP finish to try to fully seal it.

Took elanjacobs advice , so broke ot the trusty Record 405 & Stanley 78. Finished with a couple of coats of satin evolution hard wax oil, almost too good to bolt an old nutcracker to. Can someone tell me what the timber is, my knowledge of timber is very limited.
