Default Can you get flathead screws anymore???

see attached photo, I'm trying to get some vintage looking screws. I think I've been to every hardware store in SE Melbourne! I've found some similar bubble head (not sure what their real name is) but they have been phillips head and I don't want that.

The bigger screw is 16mm, smaller one is 12mm. I need a total of 50 screws. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be appreciated.

The screws are called " Round Head" wood screws and are available from Bunnings, the sizes available may depend on the gauge you require ( diameter of the shank of the screw).

sorry but they aren't at bunnings, I've checked two stores. I want flathead (or sometimes called slotted) and bunnings only have phillips head for all their screws.

The screws you are showing a picture of are indeed called round head, flat head are countersunk and have, you guessed it, a flat head.

Perhaps try a specialist bolt and fastener place, you are more likely to find them there, take your samples with you.

Go down a bit over halfway through the article and look for screw head shapes.

As MicD said, Paddington hardware in Brisbane would have them, and just about any other screw imaginable, for sale individually at a cost of 8c each or something similar. Some of the boxes of screws there have obviously been there since 1964.

If you really can't find the screws you need, call Paddington Hardware and make sure they've got them, and I'll go and get them and post them to you.
    Cheers, Richard

    vegemitegirl,

A quick tip - Brass Screws can break (shear) very easily if you try to drive them in blind.

Pre Drill your holes and preferably drive a steal screw (just short of all the way) in first then withdraw it, to cut the thread.

Then put in the Brass Screws and pinch up tight.

AllFasteners at Tullamarine have screws of all types and sizes. Slotted screws are in their latest catalogue at www.allfasteners.com.au.

Give them a call at 03 93300555. They may not sell direct, but should be able to direct you to a retailer in your area.

Best of luck. If all else fails, let me know the sizes and quantities; I may be able to help, I have literally hundreds of slotted screws from the old days...use them up slowly when restoring old furniture, particularly chairs.

    Default Flat head screws

    Hi Vegimitegirl,

Good luck with sourcing the screws. Are you aware that you can save yourself a lot of grief if using brass screws if you drill the clearance holes in the usual way and put in a steel screw of the same length guage and thread style first up. Then remove the steel screw and replace with the brass. It's an old trade trick for those without the time to be extracting broken off brass screws. That's nearly a trade in itself!

    Cheers Old Pete
