    Default Flooded gum bend?

    Hello Guys,

Can anyone tell me if flooded gum is a good wood to bend? (using non-heat method) And does it turn nicely? I haven't used it before and wondered if it's too oily to hold it's shape once glued.

    Thanks in advance!
    Clare.

Not sure about bending Clare, but it certainly turns Ok from my perspective. Here is a bowl I posted a while back from a Flooded Gum crutch I turned green.

Flooded Gum (E. Grandis) isn't greasy at all.
The pores are rather large in plantation grown wood.
Low density would suggest bending may cause rupture of the cells leading to wood integrity failure.
But, maybe it boils down to suck it and see
    Hooroo.

    Clare,
I take it you want to bend it without steaming? If so it only leaves kerfing or ripping down into thin strips and glue laminating around a caul/template. I doubt you want to kerf - lots of cuts part way through the inside of the curve enabling the timber to hinge on the outside remainder as this looks pretty ordinary. I take it you're wanting to make rockers for your horses out of it. It should be reasonably hard wearing and as long as it takes the glue well, should make a good laminated rocker.

    Thanks so much guys,

Your turned bowl is beautiful dai sensei! Lovely soft grain and colour. Thanks for sharing that.
Yes, Mick, I want to use the wood for the rockers on my horses, and the laminates get bent around a form, with horizontal cross ends turned. And thanks for the knowledge too Glock. I'll do as you suggest!
