    Default Fly fishing

Thought some of you fishy types over there might be intersted in the following:

    http://www.thomaspenrose.com/tonkin.htm

It is of course for proper fishies not you lot with the big cruisers and fibre glass clothes poles with a chunk of dead meat on the end, No, this is for the connoisseur, the artiste, the angling Kasparovs amongst you......Like Iain I suppose.
First to make one and catch a 20lb platypus will receive a greenie from me, or maybe even a John Howard fridge magnet. and some say the Scots are tight fisted!!

Thanks Beejay, I have made bamboo fly rods but nothing like that.
I made up a long jig and used a very fine blade on my little record three wheeler to cut the strips.
Rather than use string to bind the whole rod I used 'O' ring and put the whole assembly in a PVC tube and left it out in the sun for a few days, worked well.
I only ever made one piece rods as I feel that too much action is lost with the use of a ferule, the shortest rod I ever made was 2'6" long and was a 2weight for fishing in small heavily overgrown streams, with a lot of success.
I rarely use split cane now as I find it too slow, I did have a English rod made of graphite but using the same technique (forget the name now but it was a double barrel name) but found it too heavy and difficult to cast any distance.
    I now use Thomas and Thomas (1), Loomis(3), Sage(2), Pen(3), St Croix(2) and a few nondescripts.
They vary from#2 to #12 depending upon what I am fishing for but the biggest trout I have landed was 17 1/2 lbs (brown) in Lake Pedder and a few around the 10lb mark from The Great Lakes (Tassy).
My biggest freshwater fish was a 62lb Salmon which I got in Kamchatyka about 15 years ago.
Apart from that I surf fish using a #10 and regulary catch Australian Salmon up to 5lb with about 20lb of kelp and 100lb of backwash.
Flathead and whiting are good to catch too using a #7.
Thanks for the link, I may try some of the techniques shown
Below is an 8lb takeb from Peejar Dam near Goulburn NSW.

Have made my own rods before and absloutely love it; however, I have never used wood before, I must give it a shot. I will put it on my list of things to do...

Kris, it has to be Tonkin, other cane is useless.
Some major fishing retailers sell the cane, Compleat Angler used to but don't know if they still do.

Beejay, you need to come on down, we have no need to fish for flys down here.
They just come to us on their own.

I make most of my rods too but haven't tried a fly rod yet.
I've got a couple of 13' bamboo beach rods that are around 50 years old and I was going to chuck them out. Maybe this might be an opportunity to canibalise them.

Ya see, heres me tryin to hold a sensible, meaningful and constructive discussion with people and what happens,,,,in come the smartarses,, cant resist can they,,, any opportunity,,, theyre in,,,,like flies to a . makes me wonder why I bother,,, all I need now is for sturdee to get on his soapbox and tell us that flyfishing is a Royalist sport and shouldnt be allowed for fear of corrupting the masses,,,then my day would really be complete.
Think I'll go polish my dust extracter again, or wash the workshop floor,,noticed a dirty mark on it yesterday.

But yer a Pom and baiting Pom's is our national sport.
On top of that the oz members of this forum have a tradition to uphold.
This would just be another lacklustre forum if us ratbags followed the rules of orthodox forums and only made sensible comments.
Loosen up BJ and have a bit o fun.
