Thread: framing chisels

When you say framing chisel do you mean large firmer chisels 1 1/2'' and larger or those slicks that are about 3'' from america. Old firmers up to 2'' can be found here but not always socket ones. Check ebay, local markets and secondhand places. I would be intrested to hear what it is for. I have never needed anything larger than a 1 1/2'' chisel. I have seen bridge and wharf chippies cut really large joints with a chainsaw and trim with a power plane so alyways ways around a problem.

only Australian maker I know of is Harold and Saxon,

any 3/4 decent blacksmith should be able to make one, and heat treat it -- but the cost in labour will likely take your breath away

I've assumed by "Framing chisel" you mean a proper framing chisel, not a sash mortice, heavy firmer, or bevel edge firmer

I was thinking that is about the only kind of work you need really large chisels for or some wooden boat building.
I was sent a link to this site today and noticed they had a 2'' at a reasonable price. Ashley Isles has a good reputation and does a lot of old style tools.
