    Default french cleat system

I started a new cleat system. I loaded the first project with 9 chisels. It wants to lean forward. Do I need a piece in front of the base to hold it in place?

Face "b" as per the photo below needs to sit flush, and as long as the point above "a" locks, there should be no tipping. Either the heal (height) isn't long enough to resist levering, or the cleat isn't locking, causing the top of face "b" to pull away.

Perhaps if you could post a couple of photos as close to side on as possible?

    Kind regards,
    Lance

I want an Italian cleat system....something like Sophia Loren would be nice to hang my hand tools on...

Wouldn’t that design be prone to cracking the top section?

I thought they were more like this?

On units that are very long, I have seen a spacer added at the bottom to keep the unit parallel to the wall and prevent movement.

You're absolutely right, I was focused on the seating part of the drawing, and drew the movable cleat as a single piece of wood, which as you correctly noted, should be two. Thanks for clarifying.

    Kind regards,

French cleats are a very good system, but whenever I've used them, I've put a spacer at the bottom as per Lappa's suggestion.

I haven’t known them to be called a French Cleat, they were always referred to as mitred hanging rails or mitred hanging battern.
    Regardless they are very handy
