Timber ID - Any Kiwis out there?
A work mate has asked if I can help make up a new top for a coffee table that his dad made about 35-40 years ago. He's from New Zealand but can't remember what timber it was made from.
I suggested stained pine but I really have no idea. I told him I'd chuck a few photos up here to see if anyone had any ideas about it
OR
any suggestions to make nice matching top. I suggested a complete sand but he doesn't want to lose the look of the base.

I'm not a Kiwi but I have lived there and visit at least once a year without fail.
The Rimu I've seen is a pale yellowish brown colour although it could be old growth heartwood. It could be Totara.

Thanks. It looks kind of similar. I’ll run it by him and see what he thinks.

There's certainly plenty of macrocarpa growing around farmhouses over there. I've milled some from my place at Oberon and although its colour is reddish brown, the grain figure is a lot more prominent than what I can see in the photos.

Colour and lack of feature are good for kauri. My thinking is that it was pretty cheap around the time that was made and amateur kiwi woodworkers in the northern half were pretty much fixated on it. My father made a lot of furniture and I don’t think he used anything else.
Is the timber hard or soft. If it’s sort of middling then kauri is likely. Rimu is as hard as an Aussie hardwood. Totara is even harder and very heavy. Macrocarpa - could be, but there wasn’t much in use back then - I never heard of it in use till about 1990 although now it’s everywhere but that is due to restrictions on use of native timbers.Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.
