Thread: Furniture Grade Plywood in Perth WA?

Hi, this is my first post but I could not resist to answer. I used to make high end built in furniture back until 2003 and used Morgan Timber on a number of occasions to supply veneered marine or interior grade ply. I'm not sure about now but they usually only carry veneered MDF in stock so you have to order it in.

The quality was always excellent although I did once have a delay when the veneer company in Victoria had a major fire.

I would not worry about using oil finishes as this is what I predominantly used. Usually I would apply a shellac sealer first and then several coats of a mix of either a Danish oil or Feast Watson's floorseal blended with 1/3 pure gum turps and 1/3 linseed and then followed by a buff coat of wax. Depends on the effect you are after but it always worked for the type of work I did - although time consuming. Organoil have some fantastic products as well.

Where I would be carefull is the application of stains to plywoods and veneers. As the grain is sliced it can cause the stain to go on unevenly. light oil stains are probably the best but you need to do a good job of prepping. Otherwise spray finishes usually give good control if you apply lightly but I feel they tend to hide the grain - which is what it is all about isn't it
