Furniture- timber strip set into a concrete bench top
Could you set a block of, say, plywood or MDF into the concrete, and then veneer over the top? Tat would avoid the expansion issue but still give you the timber look. Jut a thought...

timber and concrete
P8210006 floor & bench.JPG Hi Lisa B, Hers is something along the lines of what you are doing. Whilst this was manufactured by others, we oiled it when we sanded and oiled the floor. I would suggest pouring the concrete first, allowing it to dry then inserting the timber strip back in. If not due to the concrete being wet, the timber will swell. If you then sand and oil, when it dries, it will shrink down again. Once the concrete is dry, sand or grind to the finish you want. Insert the timber, which should be slightly higher than the concrete surface, sand the timber then apply the Linus priming oil to the concrete if it is very porous. You can prime the timber but being a dense timber it won't absorb much anyway. then tret with two coats of the Kunos natural oil sealer, both timber and concrete.....and done. PS and this is only my opinion, by using Polyurethane, it won't allow for any movement between the timber and concrete. When finished oiling, after a few days, use some coloured silicone to suit the colour of the timber....or make a statement and use black. It will then give you just enough give and movement. Either way, good luck with it all and if you do not have a go, you will never know.
