Well, a few more exchanges with FWW "Customer service".
I thought for a while that their non-answering my specific questions about the problem was incompetence, but I now think it is an ability to admit the archive had faults.
But I may have found a relatively inexpensive solution.
On their shop website they offer a 1-year ($19.95) and a 2-year ($39.95) "upgrade" to the archive.
When I asked them what each contained, the answer was that the 1-year was for people who updated annually, and the 2-year was for people who had an earlier version. But they said BOTH UPGRADES CONTAIN THE FULL ARCHIVE!
I pointed out that this information isn't on the website, and there appeared to be nothing on the website to stop me ordering the 1-year version - either versions had gone into my basket OK when I did a dummy purchase to get a postage quote.
Again ignoring my request to confirm that the problem had been fixed, they said that in view of the inconvenience I had suffered, I could buy the 1-year upgrade, and gave me a link to it. But that link takes me straight to the normal 1-year upgrade page, it is not a special deal just for me.
They did confirm that the DVD will work on Windows 7, while the USB version will not. No idea how they can do that, but I am happy to go DVD.
I will go ahead with the upgrade, and report back in due course. The upgrade also includes a 1 year access to the online archive.

Good Morning Chris
I cannot find it on their website, either!
The only reference to the FWW Magazine Archive that I can find is an offer to sell it to me at US$99, which is $20 dearer than the special offer of $79 that they keep sending!
But I subscribe to their digital and print magazine services. This gives me online access to their digital archive, online access to virtually all books that FWW has published and to their video workshops. No where can I find a way to download an update to their digital archive.
The limitations on the online access are:
- I cannot access it once my subscription runs out,
- I cannot access if I am not online (eg during NBN black outs.)
Could you give a specific reference to where they "......offer a 1-year ($19.95) and a 2-year ($39.95) "upgrade" to the archive....." ?
Cheers
Graeme

1-year is here:
https://www.tauntonstore.com/2018-fi...1-year-upgrade
2-year is here;
https://www.tauntonstore.com/2018-fine-woodworking-archive-2-year-upgrade.html
Note the 20% offer at the top of the page.
BTW, I never referred to a download, as you did.
(and I obviously don't know how to turn off the underlining after a URL)

First I need to download the pdf - that's what I was wanting to know. i can't see a pdf button.
Update: I think you must be downloading the pdf from the subscription service, rather than the online archive, which is all i have access to. My mistake.

I have now received the 2018 archive DVD, and the images on the problem pages I started the thread with are just the same.
I have received a refund but no explanation.
