Galv or black pipe for pipe cramps
I am going to make some pipe cramps, (too mean to buy expensive ones) there seems to be a opinion that black pipe is better than galv to prevent slipping
any body have first hand experience.

My old work had some 6m gal pipe clamps and if they slipped you'd just give the release lever on the sliding jaw a tap down to make it really bite, then you could swing off the screw with a 2' bar without any problem.

I have galv pipe for some pipe clamps I made 18 months ago. I was planning on using black pipe, because that seemed to be the common thing, but Dad suggested galv would be better for rust. That seemed reasonable enough, so I went with galv.
- Galv hasn't rusted
- Galv hasn't slipped
- Galv is being chewed up by the sliding jaw. I don't know if the same happens with black pipe, but every now and then it peels up a piece large enough to prevent the sliding jaw from travelling over that section. I just have to fix it with a file to smooth it down, but it's also sharp as a burr. I'm not sure I know anything sharper than metal burrs, cuts me so easily
