Default Generator 3 phase, does anyone do this??

    hey all

so ive been looking at getting a comb machine New 2013 Felder HAMMER C3 - 31 Multi Combination in Darra, QLD Price: $11,855 <11770> $13 000 alot but it will be something i have for my life and possibly my kids so i figure it is worth it. so i rang the sydney dealer and it was $14062 with dado, and (scoring unit $400 less without). NOT including gst hmmm. late November

anyway trying to work out how i can power it as the shed doesnt have the 20amps.

could i get a generator? Diesel Generator Silenced 8 KVA 3 Phase Single Phase | eBay

i understand that this saw has a 4hp 3kw motor, and im wondering if the spike on start up will be okay and the generator will handle this.
Also would the power be a clean enough wave that it wont damage the motors.

Has anyone done a similar thing? or no if this would be a viable option for power. i dont want to run cable for 3phase or bigger wire for 20amps because i dont no how much longer i will be living here for plus its about 100m.
    cheers

    Good Morning Chris

I presume that you have had a look at the stuff on the Felder website. The videos are particularly interesting.

HAMMER woodworking machines Panel Saws Spindle Moulders Planers Clean-Air Dust Extractors

Precision equipment like Hammer and Felder would be dependent upon a reliable power supply, so hope you can find a good solution.

Looking at doing the same sort of thing, but looking for a much bigger unit than that. At the moment the biggest drain I need to supply is a 4KW car hoist motor, but on the woodshop side I will be looking toward a 3-5HP dusty and 2-3HP table saw or dusty and 3HP router etc. simultaneously. Don't know if you have a decent 240 single phase to shed, and just want something to power the beast, or you want to power the whole shedload of gear. I will have a single 15A mains into shed for battery chargers, lights, etc, but rely on genny for all bulk needs as I don't want to be running a genny to charge tool batteries.

The specs on the unit you linked are somewhat Chinese, it has a 20A 3 phase outlet, but cannot supply 20A. 8KVA is peak rating, and probably difficult to achieve, continuous rating is 5KVA, from a 6KW motor, they must have made some quantum improvement in efficiency over standard practice from the last 100 years. Personally think it would be hard to start a 4HP 3 phase motor with it, and it won't run a decent dusty and the saw. Single phase specs are 7 amps per phase, not really enough to start and run a 1.5HP motor on each phase.

Currently looking at a used 65KVA mobile backup unit from a factory closing down for my situation, overkill, but if it comes off, I can get it for under $2K with about 2000 hours run time over 20 years. Otherwise will be looking for a unit about 15KVA probably around $10K mark.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

    hey malb

it will just be the beast, dusty can just run of shed power lights are two fluro's.
i tested the power, it was sitting on 18amps.

I sold a Clearvue to a customer who ran it from a generator and the motor had to be repaired due to problems from the installation. I forget the details but it definitely needs to be done by a professional.
