Has anyone tried modifying their Gifkins Jig?

Well, it's great for doing joints up to 300mm but nothing over that unless you spend $500 buying the larger version. I'm looking at doing dovetails up to 600mm.

I did actually modify mine once. i forgot to set the router bit height and the bearing ended up UNDER the table and the dovetail cutter was the only bit ABOVE the table. I put a nice 'V' cut in one of my guides before I realised what I had done.

Yean, and what was the result? What were you trying to achieve? What type of alterations were you trying? Was it successful?

Of course ! If I ever want a dovetail which doesn't fit, I use that slot

I used a Gifkin jig to do a blanket box. The sides were around 600mm high. I put the dovetails in before joining the boards together. The manual mentions how to do boards wider than 300mm.

I think Gumby was saying he stuffed up and cut in to his by mistake.

Must be a new technique for making jigs - accidentally.

Sounds like you need a 'Keller' jig - sort of like a Gifkins but the other way up. Only one spacing per jig, comes in 2 sizes & 2 'qualities' (plastic or aluminum) for a total of 4 models.

Carbatec are importing the most basic one, or you can get them on-line - try Highland Hardware for service like LV.

Woody, what about taking the template off and pattern routing it into MDF, then moving the template along and repeating, making an MDF template as long as you like, varying the spacing also if that was desired.

Then mount the MDF template onto a block of suitable thickness, either solid wood or laminated MDF, and using the Gifkins make up a dovetailed stop (like the original Gif. one) that you could attach to the block using sailtrack, a dovetail slot, or whatever.

    Could be a goer...

    Cheers...............Sean
