    Default Glass viewing case?

Hello guys. this is my first post asking for help on this website, and i hope ye will be able to give me many ideas for the question im going to ask!

My question is what would ye consider to be the most suitable way to construct a case for this guy
At present, for a start im thinking about making the base out of solid mahogany. this will be thick enough - maybe 40 to 50 mils with a moulded edge.(like a pedestal base kinda thing) my trouble is about how to make a suitable frame to hold the glass. at present i am thinking about putting a solid back in it, and putting glass in the front, top and sides.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

If it were mine, I would probably go for an all-glass case. This could be put together like an all-glass aquarium - using silicone in the joins. I used to have an all-glass aquarium which had BLACK silicone in the joins. It looked fantastic. The black silicone was applied in very neat, thin join lines.

The edges of the glass would probably have to be polished and bevelled by a glazing shop. Of course the silicone has to be very neat and not overlap the glass significantly.

The base would be just timber construction. You would need some type of access point secreted in the base to put something in to control silverfish or museum beetles or whatever pests get into these things.

G'day Patrick and welcome to the forum.

There is a good book by Danny Proulx on making glass display cases, you can find it here, lots of ideas.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but havent used the site in a while. But thanks arron! When i thought about it, an all glass case would look the best! My plan is to use brass angle around the edges of it, and this would hide the joining and also give it a bit of extra rigidity.

    Hi Patrick and welcome.

Arron is right in recommending and all glass case. I work a day a week as a volunteer in a local museum and the contents of all glass cases are significantly more visible than those in similar cases with solid backs. Its all about letting light in, and even when a case is against the wall some light comes in from the rear.

Whether you should choose frameless or framed construction, I think, would depend largely on the decor of your house and your tastes. Both have merits.

    Cheers

    Graeme

I'm in a similar position to you, but my question is different, see, because I'm doing woodwork in my final year of schooling, and building a model boat, i've decided to make a display case for the boat when Ive finished making it, I'm still in the design phase getting close to cutting the wood and I'm not sure the best way to join the frame together at the points where the corners are (see pic), the frame is 25mmx25mm pine, anyone who would like to see the near completed design, Ive added a sketch up file of it.

    P.s - I don't mean to hijack the topic
