    Thanks WW. Since the first cut is at 45º, the staggering was to reduce waste.

    I appreciate that.

    If waste/material availability are a concern, then you might try a simple angled assembly jig made from a smooth plastic chopping board with two fences, one at 45° to the other (made from the same plastic material) screwed to it which could be used to captivate the glued veneers during assembly.

    Wedges inserted between the veneers and a second 45° fence would keep it all tight while a second chopping board placed on top of the assembly, and weighted, would help keep everything flat and orderly until dry.
