    Default Which Glue?

I need to glue a strip of wood onto a shelf in an cabinet to stand some plates behind. The shelf presumably has been finished with something!!! is an epoxy going to be a better choice than white pva to bond to a timber that has a finish on it?
    Thanks

Drill some holes in the shelf and put some dowels in the strip of wood. No glue required.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Good idea, and adjustable too, if you decide to change to thicker plates.

An epoxy or polyurethane will be your only real choices; both will require the area to be scuff sanded with 80 grit so they can develop a mechanical bond. Even then, some finishes may simply not be suitable for adhesion and you'll have to sand through to the wood underneath.

Personally, I'd just shoot a few brad nails in!

Whatever glue is used it will only be as good as the surface it is glued to. Glue only works if both surfaces are clean sound wood. If you cant get a wood to wood join then glue is not your answer on this one. All of the suggestions so far offered by the others will work.

thankyou all for the help and ideas. i drilled some holes in a test peice and filled with the wax and gave it a coat of finish. it worked out fine the wax is a real good match for the tas oak. so its keeping it simple with fine brads looks like the way to go.
