Bill,
I have not built one myself but I do have a metal, commercial one that I could get some measurements from if you would like. It suits an acoustic guitar quite well.

Have a look here, they shouldn't be too hard to make yourself

Those stands are OK for electric.
For an acoustic you need a higher stand that grabs the neck as well since they are lighter and easier to fall off such small stand.
You could use the same concept of a foldable base, attached to a longer central post with a mechanism to lock on the neck.
Best think is to go into a music shop and have a look at what they have for sale, and get some ideas from them. They are mostly metal, but you can have an idea of dimensions.
They will tell you the same. If you like your guitar don't put it on such small little thing that you can knock over any time.

There are stands there for both electric and acoustic guitars along with ukelele, mandolin, banjo, and violin stands. I am sure a suitable stand could be made if you know the dimensions of the guitar.

one question
is this stand for use on the road or for use arround "the studio".
If you are going to drag it arround the place there are sooo many choices of commercial stands that I wouldn't bother making one.
If you want a flash piece of furniture for home I shouldn't be hard to contrive something "special"

guitar stand
I actually have a metal stand for my electric guitar, but thought it would be a great idea to make something special for my classical guitar. A show piece for home maybe.
I had a look at the site sprog suggested, it's a start.
Thanks to everyone.
