    Default Gum tree log seats

    Hello all,

Being very new to wood working i am needing to know what would be the best tool to hire to square off the surface of a gum log that i split with a chainsaw.
I was thinking of tackling it with an electric planer and then sand back later.
Also what would be the best outdoor protection for this surface. The log is about 5 ft long and was close to 3ft in dia prior to me cutting in half.
It has been drying for 2years and i was told it was a ghost gum but I think it is a spotted???
Any help or direction is appreciated. I am simply looking to make 2 bench seats out of it to sit around a fire in the backyard.

    Simon.

Electric plane is perhaps the best bet. Just establish some way of checking it is level. Mind you for garden seats eyeballing should do. As to protection outdoor deck oil springs to mind. You will probably have to give it another coat every year.
    Regards
    John.

    Hi Gumguy,
I agree with orraloon I have just refurbished 2 log benches that are in our camp ground they were very weathered and full of ant's I used my electric planer then a flap disk on my angle grinder to clean up the planer marks and round of all the edges and crevices. I finished it with a good soaking of decking oil they have come up very well. There were some deep holes in the top side from weathering and I was going to fill them with epoxy filler when my wife suggested using little sticks in the mix which I did and it came up a treat when sanded and oiled.
    Regards Rod.
