Gun Stockmaking and Checkering
Hi... new here, first post in fact. Not sure if you guys will appreciate this type of work or despise me. Regardless, I'll post some imags of some of my projects. In my opinion stockmaking and checkering of same displays some of the finest traits in excellent wood, metal and finishing work. It's a shame that every single city lving hipster seems to have an emotional breakdown at the mere mention of the word gun. Anyway, Personally i'm a hug fan of traditional english styled and classic rifles so I hope you can enjoy and perhaps appreciate the work below.
This stock is for a Mauser98 action in 7x57, which means it needs a stock befitting a classic chambering -275Rigby.

Scotch and timber. The finer things in life.

I bed early on before inletting the bottom metal, so i'm working to a finished depth.

Good start there. Be really interesting to see the progress/
I had guns for years until I moved into a larger town where I had no use for them.
Always appreciated the stocks and also the fine engraving work on some of the beautiful European shotguns.

Slight hijack to a thread. I remember the gun buy-back. Watching all those illegal weapons being destroyed.
Watching this progress with great interest.
How does the wood shavings flavor the scotch???

Im trying to work out how to get pictures.... Everytime i try and upload it tells me that it is an invalid link and BBcode obviously doesnt work. Bare with me... id do wood work, not computers.
Thanks for the comments guys and glad to find a forum that hasn't gone to pot and too scared to allow anything gun related. To answer a question, this blank is a European Walnut. Of the exact origin I am not sure, but this stockist mainly sources from England. The checkering will be updated as I get it done, but i also have some other projects at different stages that I will upload if people are interested?
in any case, here is some more:
Bottom metal getting inlet
Roughing out. The customers sizes are printed and glued to the blank using bore axis for reference/datum.
Shaping with the planes, shaves, rasps and files begins. I love this part. It's when she starts to come alive and show her curves.
Test fitting all the metal inc scope, bolt clearances etc.. Remove a little, check, remove a little, swear alot.
Little details make all the difference. Nothing replaces taking your time here and getting them spot on (obviously, not yet in this picture).

Sealing coat with the uber secret process Early. Because humidity makes sweat combed with walnut equals black stains everywhere.
Next steps: ebony fore-end tip, grain raising, wet sanding, grain filling, checkering layout. Then red oil, red oil, finishing oil oil oil oil oil etc

Meanwhile #project9.3 continues:
This is not finished. This photo is only attached because it shows different passes and different depths of cut. No finishing or sharpening at this point.
Another example of Marking out and checking depths and spacing
Now, at last, the wrap around grip portion at least is pointed and sealed.

Alright. I give up.
Can an admin contact me. This forum seems to be fighting me. I just got through updating all the links to the files and come back to the thread and everything is gone. The opening post. The replies with the embed links done correctly. The whole lot. I would love to share this work with like minded fellows, but im not going to waste my time if its all just going to get taken down.
Mod edit.
Sorry - Fixed.

This is indeed a craft. The hand checking looks fantastic.
It brought to mind that one could use aboriginal xray drawings for them too.
With the ebony, whats the black ink?
Is your "secret oil" gearbox oil?
