    Default hand v power tools

Just returned from Paris having visited the Musee de Cluny I was astonished by the woodwork - to see it is to believe it. It makes you think how long it must have taken to have done all the art work and woodwork by hand. Incredible. (they must have had some big blisters!)

My uncle was a carpenter and shopfitter in the UK. His claim to fame, according to him, was that he made some of the panelled walling in Parliament House. During his apprenticeship (in the mid 30s) he would be asked to make a door. I think it would have been a panelled door. He said it took him a week to do, but that was the expectation by his employer.

Well your uncle would have loved the Palais de Justice which had unbelievable woodwork and panelling - he must have been some chippy.

in some ways it would be nice to be "back in the day and only have hand tools...the thing is they had the time as well...and no distractions like TV or this here...they just went and worked in the shop all day...i reckon that they in real terms got way more done.

You are right, when you think how long it took to do a door, window, or panelling, and as you say we have tv,dvd,pc,forums, long days to sit in the sun (well not here) ha,ha, But just to see the craftmanship is an eyeopener to a novice like me.
