Hanger Bolt Question
Hey Fellas,
I'm doing a DIY project and I'm completely new to woodworking. I intend to join 2 pieces of wood together via a threaded inset and a hanger bolt. However the hanger bolt from bunnings has a gap in the middle where there is no thread at all. I was wondering what is the purpose of the gap as I imagine if I use this to fasten there will be a gap between the 2 pieces of wood. Thank you.

I assume you are thinking of using these to join two pieces of timber end to end? You could either just drive the wood screw portion deeper into its end so that the machine screw part starts flush with timber or bury the threaded insert deeper into its end to accommodate the unthreaded portion below where it starts. If you are using it to bolt something else to the wooden element e.g. a mechanically attach a table leg to a cross piece the unthreaded portion would probably just be covered in the clearance hole of the cross piece and tightened up with a washer and nut.
There are different methods of driving the wood screw portion, usually by simply locking two nuts together on the metal screw thread. Here's a suggestion for controlling the depth you drive the screw.Franklin

The flat section is designed to take a spanner. The wood thread is screwed in using the spanner as far as possible. The remaining square section standing proud is measured and that amount clearance countersunk into the start of the hole in the other piece of the fitment. This piece is then screwed down to form a closed joint.
