    Arrow Hanging Project on Wall

This is an odd wood related question...

I've picked up a large mirror from a disposal measuring about 1.5m x 1.5m and weighing in at about 20kg. The majority of the construction is wood (ply it seems) with (obviously) a mirror front.

What's got me miffed is how to mount it...

On the back it has two 1/4" threaded studs 700mm apart. I would say there is a spreader plate / boltheads burried deep inside the timber back. The original mounting (unsafe!) was simply two short lengths of chain (over the stud with washers and nuts) ending two split rings (not kidding) which were hooked over screws in the wall.

There has got to be a better / safer way. Adding anything to the ply is out of the question as its quite thin and I don't want to risk damaging the mirrored front by trying to tap in to the timber - looks like using the existing studs is the way to go.

The only "clever" idea I came up with was this (sorry, it was metal not wood this time):

    * Get a 1m length of rectangle cross section steel tube about 15mm x 40mm
    * Cut two vertical slots in the long face 700mm apart and about 1/4" wide
    * Drill a large hole (or make slots) at the top of each slot on the adjoining short face
    * Add two (or three) mounting holes for the wall

Rough SketchUp image (not to scale) here

After testing for fit one simply puts washer and nuts on the stud leaving them about 2mm undone, mount the bar to the wall then lift the mirror and drop in the slots.

Anyone come up with and other ideas?

    Cheers!

I think you're over-engineering a bit... 20 kg isn't too much for a chain. If it were me, I'd run a chain from one bolt to the other and hang it on two well-anchored hooks in the wall, just like any other mirror. Split-rings would probably be fine but if you wanted insurance you could use D-shackles.

The chain wasn't the scary bit - it was the 2c split rings!

The downside of the chain option is that it would be hellishly fiddly to get the rings over the wall hooks / screws even with someone else holding up the mirror...

I'm starting to think a single bit of chain between the studs is a better idea (over two wall hooks). Clearance will be about the same. I could even swage a small steel cable if I was so inclined.

    A french cleat?

The 1/4" threaded studs would hold the top cleat, with the nuts/washers recessed into the timber.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Yep, that's a winner of an idea - I should have thought of that before!

I'll belt one out of a bit of Jarrah and we'll be up on the wall in no time.

    Cheers!

    Talking Z-Clip

Anyone know of a local (Perth?) supplier of "ready to go" french cleats (kind of anyway) like these "z-clips"?

Would be great for some future projects...
