    Default Hanging Vanity

    Hi WWF,

I am making a couple of Wall hung vanities from Melamine and spotty gum. Much like the one in the pic.

The question I have is in regard to the Melamine box construction. Should the back of this box be a solid sheet of melamine or three strips. And if strips how wide should these be?

    Thanks
    Damien

You can probably get away with 150mm top and bottom, but I always like to keep backs solid.

    Thanks elanjacobs.

Solid makes sense to me given the weight it must hold

Is it stronger to span the back across the two sides and screw from the back, or to recess inside the sides and screw into the back from the sides?

Your first option is the strongest.

If you screw from the back, you'd have to pull the screw through it's entire length (minus the thickness of the back) to make it fail. Screwing from the side just needs half the thickness of the back to break out.

    Makes sense now.

Now that you have me thinking about the details of the overall strength I am wondering if I am using the right length screws.

Any guidance as to what would be ideal?

Just how I was taught to build cabinets, but I think I read somewhere that screw length should be at least 3 times the thickness of what you're going through.
