    Default Hello

    Hi All,

I am new. My name is Gabriele and I live in Vinci (FI) -Italy. I have always been a lover of the "self made" (I think it would be said thus ).
When I was young, I looked my grandfather while he did everything with his hands and I was amazed how much a man can do.
By that world of "self made", few years ago, I discovered the wood, and I haven't anymore detached from it.
    I must say I haven't much experience therefore I'll be a huge "question-er".
You'll have to have much patience because some time I will not have the ability to explain what passes in my mind. I only have a scholastic language and I'll be very gratefully if you correct me.
The time for woodworking is very small: the construction of my house takes all my free time with my wife, my very young son ( 3 years old) and the new baby who is coming.
    Cheers
    Gabriele

    Welcome to the Bulletin Board.

I hope you will understand our Australian humour and words.

Is woodworking as a hobby very popular in Italy?

    Hi Gabriele.

I think your "self made" would translate as DIY ( Do it yourself ) in this part of the world. And this is right place for questions / showing your DIY wood projects.

    Cheers

    Ian

P.S. Although you type with an 'accent' your English is pretty good

    Hi Wood Borer,

I'll try to do it .
About woodworking I don't know if it is can be said it is a very popular hobby.
One moment, now I think, no.. it isn't a very popular hobby.. I don't know anybody who does a "true" woodworking (nor me:confused: ).
Here there are some "selfs" where you can find anything you want about woodworking, metalworking and so on. But unfortunately, for my thought, the quality stuff is very poor. Yes, there are brands like Stanley,Bacho but the range is very small. And more, there is most attention upon electric tools. Because I love hand tools those places aren't what I am searching. For hand tools I have had to switch on the internet market (UK, USA) and on Ebay.
    Cheers

    Italian: Buongiorno Signora Geppetto,
    Italian: Come sta?

    Australian: Gidday Mate?
    Australian: How's it hanging?

My SWMBO (She Who Must be Obeyed - Wife) and MSWMBO (Mini-She Who Must be Obeyed - Daughter) are heading to Italy in August for a couple of weeks. As this is the first time either of them have been overseas they are doing it as a package tour - but hopefully next time they'll get some freelancing in. I think they heading to Roma, Venice, Sorrento, Capri, Lombardo and so on.

They are heading to the place where they do the Inlay? I was hoping they might be able to pick up some offcuts.

    Cheers

    Hi namtrak,
I hope the whether is good, in August. Always it is.... excuse me, and you remain there in Australia ??
About your translation, you had to say : Buongiorno Signor Geppetto, because "Signora" is referred to a "lady" . "Come sta?" it is OK.
Ahhh, your members family came in Roma,Venezia,Sorrento,Capri, Lombardo??? (perhaps Lombardia which is a part of nation)..... and nothing in Florence (Firenze)- Tuscany ???( I live very near Florence . In Vinci where born Leonardo)

Excuse but I don't understand the mean of "
They are heading to the place where they do the Inlay? I was hoping they might be able to pick up some offcuts.
    "
Might you explain me with others words??
    Cheers

    Buona sera signor
mi mogli SWMBO parla poco L'italiano. Capisce?

Yes, they are visiting Florence and Tuscany.

Inlay, is the process of placing some small bits of feature timber in larger pieces. Sorrento is world famous for it.

    Sorrento Inlay

And no I am not going to Italy, I am what you call a homeboy (I dont like travelling that much) so I am going to take our other daughter up North to a place called Cairns at the same time!!

    Cheers

    G'day Gabriele,

Hope you stick around. We don't have that many members from a non English speaking background and perhaps we are the poorer for it.

You don't need me to tell you that your country has a long and proud history of making beautiful things. Many of them in wood.

Where does your interest lie? Furniture, turning, boat making, etc?

    Cheers (can't spell ciao )
