Help needed with a bolts name
Im beginning to make a bunch of tables and chairs for a new customer. They are fairly simple in design, but I wish to flat pack them.
I can't remember the name of the bolt system, but one drills a hole and using an Allen key, a "pre bolt" is screwed into the brace or skirt The bolt that passes through the leg then screws solidly into that.
I'm not sure what its called, so I can't find a picture to even show what I'm talking about!
More description: let's say, rather than using a lag bolt with a course thread that drills directly into the timber, a two-part bolt system is used. A hole is drilled, say 8mm, into that is screwed a lug. This lug has very coarse threads on the outside, it grips into the timber. The inside has a fine thread. The bolt would pass through the leg of a chair or table, then the fine screw would engage the lug and it would be wound tight using an Allen key too.
I'd imagine such a system would be used on consumer knock down furniture like tables and beds.
Any help with what they are called and/or a good supplier would be an added bonus.
Thanks all!

Insert nuts!
Huzzah! Now to find somewhere where I can buy 100 or so without being murdered on price. God everything is so expensive in this country!

They are available at hardware stores, but as you require 100 this may be impracticable. However you could always ask if they could bring in enough for you at a discounted price. (Never hurts to ask.)
Next option would be to ask at cabinet makers and/or their suppliers.

Woodpeckers have a reasonable range of things like that:

Good luck getting an order out of them.

Midnight Madness
This made me crazy!
I searched and searched and I was tearing my hair out. After this post, poof!, up they came, all with different names....and all at prices that defy logic.
McJings is good. Not toooo bad at about 50 cents. Half the price of everyone else.
In the end, at the end of my tether, I went to the shed and dug in The Big Box Of Bolts and found 50 and 75mm batten bolts with a 14g weight. Finished in some gold plating. Pulling the receipt (I'm a bit obsessive with records), they were $8 for 25.
Tested one with a cross brace and a pre drilled 4mm hole.... Bloody hell they stuck in well. I wrenched and heaved but I could not break that chairs leg.
I think these will do the job. Not as elegant (maybe Hafele will have some in bulk?) but in the short period they will work well.
Thanks for the insights guys.
I just wonder where furniture guys buy all their bulk supplies from? What magic place is there that doesn't rip everyone off 10x actual cost? (e.g. I found a 50 pack on amazon for $7.50 and $1.20 postage)Last edited by Evanism; 29th June 2014 at 12:10 PM. Reason: Prices were wrong

Hi there,
You can get two types of insert nuts from BMS/Mitre 10, sold individually, along with a couple of different length bolts. The one with the Allen key socket is easier to use, and I've simply cut off a normal key and put it into the battery drill to drive them home.
Cheers
