[help] built in bookcase challenge
I was inspired to build a book case like the picture below, my challenge is to design/assemble the middle section where the middle supporting side frame doesn't touch the counter top. all other supporting side frame will direct sit on top of the counter top so they got firm support, but the middle one is suspending in the air. so the option I had was like
1)either build the middle section as a box with a strong back and hang the section to the wall on the back.
2) use two bracket to support the middle frame from bottom and top, but I don't want any of the unsightly part to be shown
so what would you do in my case?

Large Built in cabinet
Hi Twinkiestar,
That's an impressive piece of joinery you have there. Probably 3500 to 4000mm wide! I'm unclear as to just what design changes you want to make. Is your plan to have the counter top clear of vertical frames for the whole width except for the ends??

I want the whole counter top clear in the middle three section so that I don't have two supporting vertical frame in the middle three section... I will have vertical frame touching counter top for the two sections on both ends.
also curious.. what would be your guess for the stain color in the picture if I want to stain over red oak?

I assume your suspicion is that the unsupported section may sag in time.
I'd go with option 1. With a strong back, and with the two middle verticals connecting the top and bottom pieces to the back, then it wont sag.
I faced a similar problem with this cabinet - Sideboard | Flickr - Photo Sharing! - which is made out of veneered MDF and only suspended on either end (by the metal legs). The 18mm thick back provides the buttressing which is transmitted to the top and bottom pieces by the internal elements (2 vertical partitions). There is no sag - even though it is nearly 2metres long.
We dont get much red oak in this country so cant help there.
If that were mine I'd put a bulkhead above it to close up that unnessary and dust-collecting space above the cabinet.
cheers
Arron
