Help in Canberra or nearby
Dear woodworkers,
I was just wondering if anyone in Canberra could help me with a problem:
My housemates put my Peer Sorensen Tasmanian Blackwood chopping board in the dishwasher, and it promptly fell apart. It's one of those end grain chopping boards. They are no longer made, so I was hoping it might be salvageable.
I think the pieces can be glued back together, but it would need a good sanding or even run through a planer afterwards. I don't have any of the tools needed to do it, not even clamps. I was an avid woodworker in my teens and twenties (now 38), but moving house many times means I have only a very limited set of tools nowadays.
Can anyone on here help, preferably in Canberra. If you're further away I can post you the board. Or even recommend someone? It seems like a small thing, and I could just go and get a new foreign made chopping board, but I thought I'd at least try to save this one. I can reimburse you for your time, and or help fix it if in Canberra.
My contact details are:
Jonathan Face
Ph: 0419206972

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan

Would be like putting a jigsaw together. You may find that the timber has been swollen and is no longer square, so a salvage operation won't be worth the effort or money.
Buy a new board and put it down to expeience.

It didn't totally disintergrate, it's in about 5 pieces, but a lot of the vertical joins are loose. There was some shrinkage, but I think if the strips, that seem to be holding together fine, are taken apart, and glued back together it can be saved.
I will probably need to get another though, the housemate who destroyed this one has said she'll pay for the replacement.
Just a bit sad as Peer Sorensen no longer exist. They made nice kitchen ware, from Australian timbers (alas probably also their undoing).

Having another look at it this evening I still think it is salvageable. It has come apart on the vertical joins only (except for two strips), so is essentially in 14 pieces. Some of the pieces have slightly changed shape, but I think I could sand the joining faces flat again, and then glue them all back together.
I just need 2 or 3 sash clamps, 4 G clamps and 6 pieces of scrap, sadly none of which I have. Sigh, if only I had access to my old high school workshop!
It would be too pricey to buy all that, just to glue a chopping block back together. I don't think hire companies hire out that sort of thing either? Is there a woodwork club in Canberra?
