Default help cutting hole in table top??

Hello i am in the proccess of putting a top on some old signer sewing machine legs. I need to cut a rectangular hole in the middle with rounded corners and a lip all the way around. Just like you would do when sinking the plate into a router table.

The top is being made out of some of the structural hardwood that i got. i have machined it down to about 35mm thick.

I have never done this and need the hole to be perfect for the old style singer to drop into it.

What tools do i need and how do i do it?

    Regards
    Allan

Router and jigsaw will do it. You need to make a template to rout around. Set the router at the depth you want the lip, rout around your template.
cut the middle out with the jigsaw
This is what Ive done with my router table

A router on its own will do the job just fine.
as long as the bit you use is long enought to reach thru the board.

you could make a template or just mark out the hole & set up the stock guide system to do the job with some care.
then use either a straight bit or a rebating bit to do your recess.

a job made for a router.

    cheers
Any thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
    Most powertools have sharp teeth.
    People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.

For the lip, working with a template cut to exactly fit the base of the machine, a top bearing dado clean out bit works perfectly. This is what I used on my router table. This eliminates the math and confusion in trying to make an oversize template to match your template guide.

    Something like this:

Yep, router and jigsaw or router alone. Either will do it. Don't forget to mark the hole using the INSIDE of the lip on the machine base (before the rebate). DAMHIKT.
    Cheers,
