    Unhappy help wanted/ ideas ?

I have a number of silky oak planks that are cupped &twisted about 25 mm thick, I reckon by the time i straighten on a jointer they will end up about 12mm thick .
I would like to use them for a table top about 1600 mm by 1000mm as 12mm would be too thin , what do you think about gluing and or screwing from under neath to a sheet of water proof 12 mm ply( sort of a thick veneer ) and edging it with silky oak .
what do you think ? would it split due to the different rates of expansion and contraction of the timbers.
any other ideas would be welcomed.

if you have good powerful band saw and know how to use it you could cut some of the planks into veneer 3–4mm thick and glue them to BOTH sides of a piece of 25mm MDF or chipboard (or a slightly thicker torsion box) and edge the lot with solid silky oak

alternatively rip the planks into 2 or 3 strips before thicknessing them — doing so should substantially reduce the amount of material you need to remove

Another option is to use them as a floating panel over the substrate.

But I've seen tables built like this from 14mm hardwood flooring and wouldn't do it myself.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Screwing them down to a ply panel will twist the panel so that is not a solution.

    How much twist is there?
Do all the boards have the same amount of twist?

I agree with echnidna, saw a high profile shopping centre try to do the same thing but was ignored when I offered an opinion, sure enough 3 months later all had to be ripped up (safety reasons) people were tripping over them and they were replaced with veneered sheets.

Maybe look for a different purpose for them, small cabinet, Boxes, or storage bins? Just some thoughts.

    Cheers

No some are not too bad and some have about 6mm cup and are slightly twisted by about 8 mm over a length of 1800 mm my idea was to straighten the boards on my jointer and plane them to about 12 or 10 mm and biscuit join them, and then glue them to the ply to bring up the table top to about 25 mm thick .

If you want to use this material, I suggest that you rip the worst board you intend using down the middle so that you have a 70 to 85mm wide board and then reassess how much straightening and thicknessing you have to do.

If you are determined on attaching the silky oak to a substrate, resaw two or three of the good boards into 3–4mm thick veneer and attach the veneer to BOTH faces of your ply (or MDF) substrate
(edge joint the veneers and use butt joints)
